For expatriate Brits looking to capture some of the culture and camaraderie they left across “the Pond,” a bit’o home can be found through the British Club of Charlotte.
Recently they held a traditional Guy Fawkes Night – or “Bonfire Night” – that recalls the Gunpowder Plot of November 5, 1605, in which Roman Catholic conspirators, including the celebrated Mr. Fawkes who became their titular symbol, attempted to blow up the Palace of Westminster in London.
In the UK, celebrations take place in towns and villages in the form of both private and civic events. They involve fireworks displays and the building of bonfires on which effigies of Guy are burned.
Here in Charlotte, the celebration was held at McHale's Pub and grounds, with traditional bonfire, fireworks, bagpipe player, Bangers & Mash, Shepherd's pie, mushy peas and jolly good fun.
According to its website, “The British Club of Charlotte is a social organization, made up of British and commonwealth expatriates, as well as anyone else with an interest in Britain, the British and the things we like to do (however weird they might seem to those who do not understand our sense of humor).
“Our events include fish & chip nights, darts nights and curry nights at an Indian restaurant. We also show the F.A. Cup Final live…
“So join us at one of our events. You will meet some new friends, listen to our cute accents and you are sure to have a great time.”
With the holidays coming there are several British traditions in store, including Boxing Day, Dec 26th; and opportunities to enjoy such treats as Christmas pudding cake with brandy butter, and mince pies.
